The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is very interested in using the blockchain to seek greater efficiency, but it is not yet known where the technology will be used by the unit.n
In a speech to a panel meeting on Tuesday, VA Chief Technology Officer Charles Worthington said his focus is more on finding the right technology to solve the department’s problems, according to the U.S. magazine GovernmentCIO.n
He said:n
n”We really hope that the blockchain industry can provide us with use cases … I think we will come into contact with this industry with our own problems and show us if you think of blockchain as a suitable solution Right. “n
nWorthington explains that the main issue facing the department is how to interoperate and share health information among the entities. In the past, VA had tried to address these issues and he believed that using the blockchain to solve the problem still encountered the same hurdles that other solutions have encountered in the past two decades.n
Worthington said: “We sincerely hope that the industry can provide the best ideas, and as flexible as possible to take advantage of these markets.”n
Not only is he interested in what kind of blockchain solutions this emerging industry can offer, he also wants to know how the technology can solve problems that people have not thought of before.n
Worthington believes that the development of solutions based on these new ideas will take time and there is a long way to go before blockchain technology is used for health record interoperability.n
He added that at present, there are not many blockchain use cases within the department.n
A bill submitted to the House of Representatives in 2016 showed that VA was allowed to use the blockchain ledger to store reservations. However, this bill, though approved by the Commission, has not been adopted or voted on for two years.n
